Condolences

Condolence From: Joel Shaver
Condolence: I submitted this in May but will try again:

I don’t think Ed was a Boy Scout growing up, but he pretty well fit their mold: Trustworthy, Helpful, Courteous, Thrifty and Brave - to the very end.

Losing his first love Shelly rocked his world. They found out about her cancer the same day he was hit in a big layoff at our work. Their plans were to retire early together and travel across this country in a dream RoadTrek camper. They van camped a lot but vacations were always too short, and they wanted to be able to take their time. I hope they can be toghether now and not worry about time.

We always talked about “going to the lake.” It was the carrot at the end of the “work” stick.

I will miss Ed. We traveled coast-to-coast multiple times visiting friends and seeing the sights. I left out Friendly and Cheerful from the list above, but we had such good times around the campfire.

We lost a good man last week. God bless his soul.

Condolence: As a good friend of mine says, this is where we do the sad part. But all my memories of Uncle Eddie are happy ones.

From playing Legos at my grandma’s house (his mother) in New Orleans, to visiting his and my Aunt Shelley’s cool duplex, and his faithful attendance at all my major life events - I could always count on my Uncle Eddie to “get me”, understand my world, be curious and crack a joke that seemed to exist only between us.

Uncle Eddie was great with my kids and they all have a soft spot for him, especially Isaac, who saved up several years of Eddie’s gift cards to buy a TV for college – Eddie thought that was the greatest thing. My kids thought he was so cool because he played the same video games as them.

Eddie inspired my own musical interests by giving me his old drums when I was eight years old; I still play on those old drums today and have collected many, many more.

My Uncle Eddie is a lot of things to me, but he’s also my cool mystery man, man of the 70’s, enjoyed his whole life like a bachelor, yet happily married. He and my Aunt Shelley lived their whole life like a couple of kids. My coooool Uncle Eddie, the Legend, I’ll miss you like a brother.

Condolence: Well hi little brother, It looks like it’s about time to say goodbye again. I never expected to be the one to say a final goodbye to you, I always thought it would be the other way around but life sometimes does unexpected things. I wish the last few months had been better for you but I know you’re glad it’s over. You can now once again go camping with Shelly. Your hands and fingers may not be the right size for playing a harp up in the clouds but I bet you still get to bang on the drums you loved so much. There were times in the past that you were an ornery little squirt growing up but I loved you then and love you just as much today.
Good bye Brother, tell all the family how much I miss all of you.

Condolence: My Uncle Eddie.

This past week has been the lowest of lows and the highest of highs all in a stretch of seven days...Our saving grace was that each event took its own end of the week, we began with the grieving, then the celebration of a college graduation.

There was nothing ordinary about my uncle, he was always marching to the beat of his own drum, a drum he excelled at playing himself! I don't think he loved anything more than playing the drums. Music was everything to this man, a life long passion, always in a band. He gave my younger brother his first set of real drums and the passion stepped down to the next generation. A little boy who loved the drums, and as a grown man he has loved being in the band...

The one thing that my uncle loved almost as much as music was camping. He traveled with his wife all over the United States in a van he tricked out himself. My Aunt Shelly was his companion of choice, he loved her deeply. Her passing many years earlier left him bewildered, lost without her. Music stayed a constant, but only recently had he purchased a new van and began tricking it out to camp again. But as fate would have it, illness took his life this past week. We had six months to prepare for his passing, but it hasn't made us any less saddened.

Condolence: Our family will always cherish our loving memories of Eddie. I remember meeting him and being in awe of his New Orleans accent. Shelly was a cherished friend since Junior High days and our daughter is named after her. We would visit them when we returned to Kansas to visit family for Christmas. On one visit, Eddie gallantly went out in the cold and snow to de-ice and warm my car, while Shelly and I watched from the warmth of their home. I am so thankful for the conversations we had during the last month. Eddie was a great person, loving husband and friend. Our love, thoughts and prayers are with his family, relatives and friends. We will miss him.
