Doug Stuber, age 62, of Amelia Island, FL passed away on Monday, November 28, 2016.
Born in Fort Riley, KS, Doug was the son of Connie Stuber Klassen and the late Leon Stuber. Doug grew up in Wichita where he attended Wichita High School East, Class of 1972. He graduated from Wichita State University with a Bachelor of Science Degree and became a lifelong avid Shockers Fan. During college, he met Darla Schank who would become his adored wife in 1978. They shared a love of Shocker Basketball and Broncos Football. After they married, Darla joined Doug in Joplin, MO where he began a long and accomplished career in the Credit and Finance Industry.
He was employed by Sears Credit and Household which later became HSBC taking them to Denver, Colorado Springs, Chicago, Mexico City, Jacksonville and Tampa where he held the position of Director of Global Resourcing. He retired in 2009, and they returned to his beloved Amelia Island.
Doug gave much of his time and talent to Fernandina Beach. He was a permitted volunteer for Amelia Island Sea Turtle Watch and educated friends and visitors alike about our sea turtles. He participated in Shrimp Fest parades, Flowering Fernandina and the First Coast Koi Club. Collecting Koi gave him great joy and he showed them, winning numerous competitions.
He was a member of NANFA and Suncoast Killifish Association and traveled with fellow enthusiasts netting and collecting native species. Doug had a passionate knowledge of flora and fauna which he could be relied on to share and enjoy. He and Darla loved kayaking and bicycling on Amelia Island, FL.
Doug and Darla traveled extensively in their 38 year marriage, many times off the beaten path in the US, Canada, Mexico, South and Central America, Asia, Spain, and most recently France; soaking up the culture and cuisine and enjoying wines of the region. Their passion was the Rocky Mountain West and Southwest enjoying snow skiing and hiking. Doug was fluent in Spanish and loved the chance to practice.
He is survived by his wife, Darla, Amelia Island, FL, his mother, Connie Stuber Klassen, two sisters, Anita Hoefling and her husband, Darrell, Angel Mann and her husband, Don, a brother, Willie Stuber, all of Wichita, KS and many nieces and nephews.
We are all a bit kinder, more joyful and more connected because of Doug.
